Programme description
Geo-English Studies: Literature, Culture, and Media Communication is a program designed to equip students with practical knowledge and skills in English-language literary and cultural research, as well as in media communication. The curriculum emphasizes the development of soft skills essential for the effective use of media platforms in promoting literary and (inter)cultural content. These include the ability to craft engaging messages, tailor communication to specific audiences, work effectively in group settings, and think creatively in project-based contexts. A key component of the program is critical reflection on the functional role of global English as used in cultural texts across contemporary media, including social media. The majority of courses are conducted in English. The program includes modules on new technologies (e.g., practical applications of artificial intelligence) and contemporary humanities, fostering critical, creative, and unconventional thinking – skills indispensable for navigating the modern world. The course content is grounded in cutting-edge international research and is closely aligned with the scholarly work of the Faculty of English. The academic focus includes studies of various forms and manifestations of culture, with particular attention to British, Irish, and Commonwealth literatures, cultural theory, film, and English-language theatre. Special emphasis is placed on the study of English-speaking countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and former British colonies like India and South Africa, in view of their cultural, economic, and political significance on the global stage. Although the program primarily focuses on the literature and culture of the English-speaking world, it also equips students with advanced linguistic competence. This proficiency enables them to produce both oral and written discourse in English on topics related not only to literature and culture, but also to diverse socio-political contexts of the aforementioned countries.
Requirements under the Act on the Protection of Minors
It is a prerequisite for mandatory student work placements (internships) that the student meets the requirements set out in the Act of 13 May 2016 on Counteracting the Threat of Sexual Offences and the Protection of Minors, in particular to undergo verification in the Sexual Offenders Register and to submit information from the National Criminal Register with regard to specific offences, and in the case of students who are foreigners or who have resided in the last 20 years in countries other than the Republic of Poland, also to submit additional declarations, as well as information from the criminal records of other countries together with sworn translations.
